Before there was a public facility, there was a classroom, a rescued animal, and a teacher trying to give students a closer look at the wonder of creation.
What became known through Mountain State Reptile Rescue, The Reptile House & Rescue, and Zoology Zone Science Center began in 2018 with Andy McKee and was deeply inspired by his father, Pat McKee, pictured to the left. Pat’s love, influence, and example helped shape the heart behind the mission: rescue when possible, teach with passion, and help people see animals with curiosity, respect, and wonder.
Over the years, that work grew from a classroom rescue effort into public programs, animal education, community events, outreach, and eventually the Zoology Zone Science Center. Many of the animals, programs, and public experiences connected to that work now continue under separate leadership as Wildlife and Discovery Center of WV.
This website exists to preserve the founding story, honor the legacy that started it, and introduce the next chapter: Mr. McKee’s Wild Science, Andy McKee’s independent science education work.
For current facility visits, animal care, onsite programs, or donations, please search for Wildlife & Discovery Center of West Virginia directly or visit www.wildlifediscoverywv.org.
Andy McKee is carrying the heart of the mission forward through a new chapter -- Mr. McKee’s Wild Science, offering hands-on science learning for curious kids and families through independent programs, self-guided courses, homeschool enrichment, camps, field experiences, classroom lessons, and community events.
Whether you are a parent, homeschool family, teacher, library, church, professional organization, looking for professional development, a camp, or community group, Andy would love to help create a science experience that fits your needs.
Mr. McKee’s Wild Science is being built as a flexible science education platform for curious kids, homeschool families, schools, libraries, churches, camps, and community groups. Programming is still being developed, but the goal is simple: make science come alive through real-world lessons, hands-on activities, field experiences, and wonder-filled learning.

Video lessons, worksheets, activities, and field challenges families can complete at home.

Science learning designed for homeschool families who want engaging, teacher-led instruction beyond the textbook.

Outdoor learning opportunities built around wildlife, ecosystems, observation, and discovery.

Flexible science presentations and workshops for schools, libraries, churches, camps, and other professional and community groups.
Many of the animals, programs, and public experiences founded and connected to the legacy of the Zoology Zone now continue under separate leadership as Wildlife and Discovery Center of WV which operates independently with its own leadership, policies, programs, and communications.
For current facility visits, animal care, onsite programs, or donation information, please contact them directly.
Mr. McKee is a full-time high school science teacher during the school year, so his students remain his first priority. Mr. McKee’s Wild Science programs are typically available on weekends, school breaks, summer dates, and select weekdays arranged in advance.
Travel opportunities are welcome for schools, camps, libraries, churches, homeschool groups, conferences, and community events when program fees and travel expenses are arranged ahead of time.
